Fanfare For the Common Man
Fanfare for the Common Man was composed by Aaron Copland in 1943. It was conceived to be a celebration of the courage of all U.S. fighting forces in the second world war that was going on then.
It was in the mid '70s that Emerson, Lake and Palmer lengthened the original Fanfare, updated it with its new electronic pulsations, gave it a much harder edge, and more futuristic tones as well. ELP were the first performers to use the synthesizer, as shown in the clip, and were reported by Rolling Stone Magazine, back then, to be the band that unleashed the most decibels of sound onto their audiences than any other rock ensemble.
ELP's version has been used around the world as a TV theme; in the U.S.A., Fanfare for the Common Man was the opening theme song for ABC's Wide World of Sports; in Mexico as the main title song of TV AztecaTV sport program DeporTV, and formerly in Scotland when the BBC used it as the theme to their main news programme Reporting Scotland in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
If there ever was a higher energy three man band, we'd be hard pressed to find it. This clip is from a practice in the huge—and chilly!—Olympic Stadium in Montreal, attended by only the hardier their of die-hard fans in sub-zero conditions. I consider it to be a celebration of winter itself. Enjoy.

Digging into the past
Hi,
You’re most welcome, Beangel, and all others that appreciate the clips. Yes, there’s lots of memories surrounding older rock... I’m your OPU musical 'miner' right now ; ) At least it's not too sooty–digging out tunes that time threatens to bury away from us.
Happy holidays amigos and amigas.
Truly yours,

The Three Tenors sing Lennon
"I know not what weapons World War III will be fought with, but I do know that World War IV would be fought with sticks and stones." —Albert Einstein.
A little about "Happy Christmas/War is over."
John Lennon, with Yoko Ono, spent a lot of time in the late '60s, and in the '70s working to promote peace. In 1969, they put up major billboard posts in major cities around the world. They posted: "War Is Over"(If You Want It). Two years later, when John decided to make a Christmas record with an anti-war message, this became the basis and theme for the song.
John and Yoko wrote it in their New York City hotel room, and then recorded it in late October, 1971 at the Record Plant, with the collaboration of Phil Spector, in New York. It was released that year for Christmas in North America, but oddly enough it didn't hit the charts as expected. The next year, it was released in the UK, where it did better.
The song had literally been forgotten until John was shot, and killed in the lobby of his New York's luxury Dakota appartment, three weeks before Christmas 1980. The song was then re-released in the U.K. on December 20 that same year, and was never ignored again for what it actually is: a soft rock Christmas hymn. Today, Lennon's song has become a popular classic on the Christmas season musical menus, and is heard on the airwaves worldwide.
Here, 'the three tenors', Luciano Pavarotti (deceased this past September), Placido Domingo, and Jose Carreras, filmed live at Vienna's Konzerthaus, sing "Happy Christmas/War is over" energetically, and with their reknowned strength and harmony, at their 'Christmas in Vienna' performance. Accompanying them, at this 1999 special concert, are the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Choir Boys.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra's magic
The video qualitiy isn't the best. But you'll catch the drift, and stay tuned for the next clip, which is a show finale, with better quality.
