Hello.

Two men were by a pond watching the koi fishes swim under the calm and clear surface sprinkled with water lilies. A frog lazily plopped into the pond from the leaf it was sitting on. The setting was exquisite, just as the blue sky and the day were beautiful.
“Those fish are intelligent for having chosen this pond in their pursuit of happiness”, said one man.
The other man asked him: “How would you know that those fish are intelligent?”
“How would you know if I know”, answered the first man.
The other man replied: “How can you know that I cannot?”
“That isn’t the point” said one fish.

The above piece would be too short, and the moral is too obscure to qualify. It's just that i stumbled upon it and liked it. The author is unknown.

Your contents may be anything you wish it to be. Up to PG13 is fine. Can you in a few hundred words condense some work that’ll be interesting - the genre is yours to pick as well, and the ending, well…

Someone said that some stories have good endings, some have sad endings, and that some have no ending at all! Well, you'll have to judge that too. You are the writers, and to be fair, as the judge (with 51% shares : ), I will ask others, such as friends on this site, and off, for their feedback. Just a note, short stories that have a moral usually leave the reader more fulfilled.

Rules and clues: original stuff, no plagiarism; be yourself and address your readership as they were your close friends.

I will no doubt find many interesting stories from here on,

So I'm really looking forward to this.

Happy writing and good luck to all.

Truly yours,

Smile I'll start that! "Two Brothers"

i'll start this!
an original poem written by me (self explanatory IMHO)
(also published by thte national poetry society)

Two Brothers
On a grassy hill,
where time stands still,
a rainbow across the sky...
I see two brothers sit and smile,
they never said goodbye.

For underneath this rainbows liight,
are two spirits so happy and bright,
Two souls which God had meant to be,
Together day and night.

This special place was meant to be,
for all of us to see.
However you must first believe,
and someday share with me.

(aka,,, jmz)

(not a short story..but it does tell a story! ;- )

Good start

We have one entry clocking at 73 words.

Substance can account for a lack of volume - if it stands at the end of the competition.

This poem is no doubt very personal to you. I find it airtight, but I suspect some deepness in it beyond my knowledge.

Our first competitor, misticjoz qualifies. Bravo! Your pretty rhyming entry ranks at #1 by default.

Oh, by the way, except for I, staff is allowed to enter, that I know of. The rules allow it... I made the dreaded things up, ya know!

Go on staffers! Some of you surely have a little something to share, I just know it. Staffers, Members... there's some moolah at stake here, put pen to paper, and make us happy readers.

Btw, did you know that $50 is par, or less, with what Ray Bradbury, or Robert A. Heinlein (it was his Centennial earlier this year), got offered for their first short stories, and only after being rejected by an obcene number of editors that offered them sweet diddly squat.

Let the competition resume,

Good luck to all,

And happy writing,

Yours truly,

I Have Sat On A Cold Bench

I have sat on a cold bench with my love wrapped in my arms
As the chill wind blew as her head lay on my shoulder,
And I was happy.

I have seen the life in my love's eyes
and it filled my soul
As her heart sang for the blissful touch
that my mind feared to give.

I have heard my love speak those three words
That inebriates the romantic heart
As our lips drew near and our hearts
Sang the song of blissful lovers.

I have felt the pain of my love as she is borne
Away on southwestward winds
As our hearts were one for a time, but
That unity was broken by that breeze.

I have felt the pain of confusion as the love
I shared was torn asunder
As the love she had morphed into friendship, and she
Did not have the heart to be blunt.

And now I am alone with the cold winds
That chill to the heart and the bone
As the son of love in my heart has now gone silent
Waiting for the new bard to play.

A tale of two lovers lost.
