Female Boxing Champ Dies

21 year old Giselle Salandy died at Port of Spain General Hospital after being injured after her car ran off a highway, smashing into a concrete column.

Salandy held titles for several international female boxing groups, including the World Boxing Council and the Women's International Boxing Association.

Sports Minister Gary Hunt said

"The sport fraternity has suffered a tremendous loss and Trinidad and Tobago has lost an icon. Giselle was a role model for young people, especially females."

Salandy earned the women's welterweight title at the age of 16, after beginning to box at the tender age of 11. At 16, she was still 2 years younger than the minimum age for a professional fighter in Trinidad, which caused some controversy.

That is just aweful. She was so young. I had not heard of her before most likely because I don't follow boxing but it sounds as though she was very successful and had a great future ahead of her. We just never know when from one day to the next what is going to happen.

This is aweful news. No one wants to hear about the death of someone so young, but it makes it all worse when you know that this young lady had such a success and a wonderful career in front of her.
You dont often hear of women in such sports, though this one young lady could have been the one to change all of that, and now we will never know.
My prayers are with her family and friends.
