Prohibiting gambling not effective with problem gamblers.

Joanna Franklin, president of the Institute on Problem Gambling, says treatment helps prevent problem gambling incidents, but prohibition of gambling does not work. Franklin says compulsive gambling victims will find a way to gamble regardless of laws restricting gaming options
When you take into consideration that only 3% of the population has gambling problems and that the number of problem gamblers stays constant, you have to wonder what the big deal is.

And, if this is part of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) this compulsion to gamble would only end up being replaced by another compulsion.

Since studies are proving that most gambling problems are caused by certain genes, it is definitely treatable and the 3% of compulsive gamblers should not dictate as to whether gambling is legal or illegal.

Re: Prohibiting gambling not effective with problem gamblers.

You said it all Bartongrl1! Though they will always try to use that 3% as a reason why gambling should not be be legal.

Those stiff shirts will do anything just to make our lives miserable I think. They seem to take great pleasure by sitting around on their butts comming up with ways to make our lives less fun, all the while they rake in the money for nothing.

For the millions of people who gamble every year just for a bit of fun, 3% isnt a bad number at all. Those numbers could be a whole lot worse, but even though the number of problem gamblers is so small they will use it to their advantage to help keep the legalization of gambling from happening.

Gambling addiction is like any other kind of addiction, you are not gonna stop it until the person with the addiction is ready to quit. First they have to admit they have a problem. Until then nothing will help.
