No Tax in Ireland for Online Gambling
When I first read about this I must admit I was completely shocked that the Ireland government is not taking their opportunity to tax online gamblers. It sure does seem like most governments would be all over this!
According to the Irish Dependant, the government of Ireland has decided to hold off on taxing online gambling. They have no plans to extend betting tax from bookies shops to online gambling or bets that are taken over the telephone. Online services will remain tax free.
Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan said that he had put off making drastic changes to the industry because he feels he needs more time to study it. He said attempts that have been previously made failed because the big bookmakers simply moved their operations offshore where they would not have to pay tax such as Gibraltar. Many of them continue to operate from there today.
