How Did You Learn Poker?

Most people learn to play or at least start learning to play poker when they are kids and usually from a parent, close friend or family member.

Personally when I started learning poker is was from watching movies and TV shows. No one really taught me the game, well not really til I was much older.

I still don't play the game well and still learning really, but I do play well enough to play for pennies when people want to play.

Mostly these days I play online. It seems when I am able to play a game everyone else is busy and vise versa when they want or can play.

Which is why I am glad that we can play many great and favored games online at any time regardless of it being day or night.

So for those of you who play poker how did you get started in the game??

Re: How Did You Learn Poker?

I never learned to play poker myself. I am still picking up new things each time I hit the tables that is the nature of the game. The famous quote A minute to learn a life time to master, this is true of even the oldest pro's in the game.

I met Daniel Nagranue I know I miss spelled his name, anyway when I asked him when he know he was ready to turn pro he simply stated it was when he figured out he needed to learn from the best.

Mr Brunson has said he keeps learnign new things from each generation that he sits with, so if you ever doubt your poker skills just remember everyone else does as well. When you think you know it all its time to get out of the game.

Re: How Did You Learn Poker?

How true that is themuddyone. Except for the last sentence...

When you think you know it all it's time to get out of the game.

I would say, when you think you know it all about poker, it's time to play against rookie poker players.

You'd be surprised how quickly your pride can be shot down by playing rookie players and then get beat.

Then would be the time to re-think your poker skills, take your pride down a few knotches and get back to playing real poker.

Re: How Did You Learn Poker?

I learned to play poker with my dad back when I was a kid. We played all kinds of card games because that was before TV and way before all the game systems etc came out.

So that being said, cards was the main form of entertainment back then.

Re: How Did You Learn Poker?

That was about the same thing for me when I was growing up.

There were a few things we could do; ride bikes, play some type of ball game outside, search for things in the woods, watch tv and play cards.

My mother taught me how to play many of the card games I know how to play today.
Except for Texas Hold'em and Omaha poker. I had to learn those on my own.

My main form of enterainment was walking throught the woods or to the strip-mine across the street or riding bikes.

Re: How Did You Learn Poker?

I spent most of my summer from the time I was 8 until I was 15, in a flat boat on the Muskingum River. Loved those days and was very fit because of all the rowing etc. And hikes in the woods.

Evenings were devoted to playing cards when my dad was home. Pinochle, poker, rummy. Guess I played so much that they just don't appeal to me any more.
