Moscow's poker clubs are booming, with new clubs opening every month. Luxurious venues, some being by invitation only, or other more open games which offer daily tournaments with $500.00 buy-in and unlimited rebuys. There are also several clubs for those just learning the game, and who can't afford to play in the big buy-in events.

The reason that poker clubs are so prevalent now in Russia? It's been officially declared a 'sport' by the government. This opens many doors in Russia for poker, that's had such a struggle in so many other countries. Poker tournaments are sanctioned by the government in Russia, and so are treated as any other sporting event, just as hockey or soccer sporting events are.

The Russian government's sanction of the sport of poker means that a traditional casino is no longer necessary for matches and tournaments to be played, and so the poker clubs are becoming prevalent in the cities and suburbs of the country.

One resort will see the top players of Russia, and also a few of the biggest names in international poker on August 16. The tournament will be held at the Zavidovo Resort, which is a luxurious complex located about 60 miles from Moscow, and is frequented by some of Russia's most high-powered government officials. It's been reported that Tony G., Phil Ivey, and Patrik Antonius will be in attendance. Organizers of the event expect up to 90 players to participate in this event, which is expected to easily break the record for the biggest prize for an 'official' Russian poker tournament.

It is becoming one of the most popular games online and in casinos, halls etc., if it isn't already the most popular.
